Tips for buying antiques

The antiques industry is a multi-million dollar business so it is essential to know the basics when buying

Buying and collecting antiques is a great investment and can add beautiful adornment to any room. Yet with the high expense of antiques it is crucial to make wise investment and buying decisions to ensure that you do not spend your money on items that may be less than promised.

When it comes to antiques, they are generally classified as a collectible item that should be over 100 years old while having aesthetic or historical value.

What this means is that you should research any item thoroughly before you even consider buying it. Look into its originality and historical significance, which means trying to have a keen eye for any repairs or touch-ups to the surface of the object. While these actions may make an item look better, in the world of antiquing to resurface an item is to detract from its originality and, therefore, its value.

While you are researching, look into the market for the item you are buying. This is especially crucial if it is an investment piece as antiques tend to go in and out of style, which means that you may spend hundreds of dollars on an items wanting to resell...only to find that no one is really interested.  Look up global antique prices and the history of antique items along with current sales at auction houses. The items that are selling for high amounts are those that are currently popular.

Speaking of antique auction houses, they may be the very best bet when buying antiques. While there may only be one or two in your area, online there are many antique auction houses through which you can bid.  While this means you cannot inspect the items yourself, reputable auction houses will only sell genuine articles and there will be guarantees involved including certificates of originality. However it should be noted that there are a range of online auction houses so you should only use those that have a high standard and reputation or you run the risk of buying an item that is not what you imagined.

It auction houses are a tad too official and intense for you, simply visiting local garage sales can be a great place to start into the world of antiquing as you would be surprised at the number of valuable items you can find on someone else’s junk.

Finally if you are close to buying a certain antique item, then be sure to research how to take care of it and preserve it to the best of your ability in order to maximise your investment.
