Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to clean my jewellery before I send it to you? No. This is not necessary at all. Do you buy unwanted jewellery for resale? Yes. We have a very strong Second Hand Jewellery business and we are always looking for stock. It is best to contact us via email or phone and discuss the process. What we do need first off is a good description, perhaps a Valuation or the original Retailers invoice can help with these details, and if possible a photograph. Do you pay for Gem Stones? Normally we do not pay for gem stones, however, each piece is appraised individually and any stones that are recoverable, especially Diamonds, we will pay wholesale price for them. How many grams to an ounce and how do I weigh my jewellery? There are 31.37 grams to an ounce. You do not need to weigh your jewellery to send it to us, but if you wish to do so, kitchen scales can be accurate enough or visit the Post Office/Butchers and they can weigh it for you. What if I send goods that are not of any value? It is our policy to return these goods to you as soon as is possible. What if my jewellery has any set stones? You can visit you local jeweller and have them removed, but this can be expensive. It is best to send them to us and we can appraise each piece on its merits, if your stone set jewellery is in good condition, or can be repaired by us, very often we will pay a little more for it. How do I know what type of gold, platinum or silver I have? How will I be paid and How soon? We will contact you within 24hours of receiving your parcel, we much prefer to ring you, and offer you a price. If you accept our offer you will be paid as soon as the phone is put down or we receive your confirming email. Either, we will direct debit your personal account (This account must be in the name of the person sending the jewellery) or, a non-negotiable cheque will be posted to you that day made out in your name. If you don’t like our offer we will return your goods to you the next post. We do not post items where they will be travelling over the weekend or a public holiday. Can I trust you? Yes. We have been in business for 30 odd years and we value every single customer. Your parcel on arrival is opened in front of a security camera, and in front of this camera several photographs are taken of your goods and the enclosed paperwork. Your pieces are appraised and then you are contacted. How do I send my jewellery to you? We recommend sending by Australia post (registered) or one of the well known parcel delivery companies. What do you Buy? We Buy….Anything that is gold, platinum and silver (Please talk to us before you send silver, the price of silver is a little low at the moment) Damaged, old or even new. Rings (damaged or otherwise) Earrings (even if you have lost one) Chains Bracelets Anklets Brooches Pendants Charms Bangles Rings/Jewellery with gems/diamonds etc Tooth fillings (gold) Wedding bands Items which include gold in manufacture Broken, bent, tangled or unwanted pieces Bullion Coins Items with missing stones Old gold watches (we remove the movement and only weigh the case and band) All the old jewellery from past “friends” And more!!!! How much will I be paid? Gold is an international commodity and it is impossible to quote prices, not only does the price vary on a daily basis but the value of the Australian Dollar is also instrumental in the final worth of gold on the Australian market. You must also consider that the total weight of your jewellery is not all gold. For example your 9ct gold is 37.5% gold, your 14ct gold is 58.3% gold, your 18ct gold is 75% gold, the rest of the weight is made up of alloys, and the weight of any set stones must also be considered. 22ct and 24ct gold pay more due to the higher gold content. Please Note: We check each piece of jewellery and determine the quality of the gold and pay accordingly. It has come to our attention, through customers, that at some of the gold parties, mistakes have been made in determining what gold you have. For example, paying 9ct price for 10ct or even in one case, 18ct gold. Can I visit your store in Brisbane City? Yes. You are cordially invited to visit our store and no appointment necessary. Don't forget we do by law need identification from you. Our business hours are 8.30am till 4.45pm Monday till Friday, Saturday 10am till 2.45pm and closed on Sunday. Will you visit my Business/Office or home? Yes. Please either ring or email us to arrange a time. We will come to you at a mutually convenient time and also pay either Cash, Direct Debit, or Cheque. citigoldaustralia.com.au/home visit service How do I know what type of gold, platinum or silver I have? Pure gold is 24carat and many countries use pure gold, or 22ct for their jewellery, but generally speaking the Australian market prefers the look of gold mixed with alloys. This process is quite regulated and your jewellery should have a stamp mark indicating the gold content. For example: (If your jewellery is not stamped we can test and confirm the gold content) 9ct gold is stamped either9ct, 9k, 375. 10ct gold is stamped either 10ct, 10k, 416. 14ct gold is stamped either14ct, 14k, 585. 18ct gold is stamped either18ct, 18k, 750 21/22/23/24 Carat gold quite often will not have a stamp mark, but we can test this jewellery and confirm the gold content. (No damage to your jewellery) Platinum – stamped 950, 950PT, Plat Silver – 925, StgSil, SSil, Stg. (Most silver jewellery is Sterling Silver) Other silver – 800. Jewellery marked with GF, GP, or RG are gold plated and have no value. Jewellery marked with 9ct/StgSil, 9k/925 or variations mean that you have a 9ct gold sleeve with silver inside; this can apply to chains, bracelets and bangles. We do not buy these. Also there are some 9ct pieces with copper inside in lieu of silver.
