A PAINTING by William Dobell, a presumed portrait of bushranger Frank Gardiner and a collection of 19th-century cedar furniture are among more than 700 lots to be auctioned at Hinton next Saturday.
Auctioneer Paul Taylor has described the sale as one of the most exciting in his 30-year career. Most of the lots are the contents of "Mount Pleasant", a house in Hunter Street, Hinton, associated with the estate of the late John Forsythe."Two of the bedrooms, the dining room and the study are virtually time capsules of the late 19th century," Mr Taylor said. "I'm actually expecting an awful lot of people to come along just for the chance to see some wonderful pieces of furniture in their original settings."Among the cedar pieces was a rare six-legged sideboard, three four-poster beds and a large library bookcase. Other furniture included an oak sideboard, said to have been owned by NSW colonial identity Sir Charles Nicholson.Mr Taylor said the Dobell painting was a small watercolour depicting three figures on a lake shore. The bushranger portrait was the work of local painter, poet and miner William Reay and the auction included other art including some watercolours by famous bird painter Neville Cayley.A range of bric-a-brac, pottery, porcelain and silver would also be auctioned. The lots will be available for viewing on Friday, November 30, from noon until 6pm.
